Love, Romance and
You Know What!
Compiled by Peter Stafford Sumner
Chapter 5.
Chastity
Chastity …
is the necessary pre-condition to any kind of moral life superior to that of the animal. At the same time, the energy created by chastity has a natural tendency to be, on the whole, more evil than good. By fulfilling the conditions upon which, and upon which alone, the higher moral life is possible, we transform our nature in such a way that it becomes easier for us to behave immorally than to behave morally.
Aldous Huxley
Beauty
and chastity have always
a mortal quarrel between them.
Spanish proverb
Too
chaste an adolescence
makes for a dissolute old age.
Andre Gidé - Journals
'Tis
chastity, my brother, chastity:
She that has that, is clad in compleat steel,
And like a quiver'd Nymph with Arrows keen
May trace huge Forests, and unharbour'd Heaths,
Infamous Hills, and sandy perilous wilds,
Where through the sacred rays of Chastity,
No savage, fierce, Bandit, or mountaineer
Will dare to soil her Virgin Purity.
John Milton - Comus
The
cement of civilisation and progress.
Mary Baker Eddy
And
now you are to be mine! Now I am about to experience celestial joy on earth! I see you as a young wife, then a young mother, but always the same Adele, as adoring and adored in the chastity of married life as in the virgin days of your first love.
Victor Hugo -
in a letter to Adele Foucher (to whom he was notoriously unfaithful),
15 March 1822, shortly before their marriage.
The
little respect paid to chastity in the male world is, I am persuaded, the grand source of many of the physical and moral evils that torment mankind, as well as of the vices and follies that degrade and destroy women.
Mary Wollstonecraft - in, Vindication of the Rights of Woman
Mrs
Wicksteed: Of course I've known for years our marriage has been a mockery. My body lying there night after night in the wasted moonlight. I know now how the Taj Mahal must feel.
Alan Bennett
The
Duchess of Ormonde promised me her picture, and coming home to-night I found hers and the Duke's both in my chamber. Was not that a pretty civil surprise? Yes, and they are in fine gilded frames too. I am writing her a letter to thank her, which I will send to-morrow morning. I will tell her she is such a prude that she will not let so much as her picture be alone in a room with a man unless the duke's be with it.
Jonathan Swift - Journal
Chaste
women are often proud and forward,
as presuming upon the merit of their chastity.
Francis Bacon - Essays 1625
There
was a young lady named Wylde
Who kept herself quite undefiled
By thinking of Jesus
Contagious diseases,
And the bother of having a child.

I
had prayed to you for chastity and said, "Give me chastity and continence but not yet." For I was afraid that you would answer my prayer at once and cure me too soon of the disease of lust, which I want satisfied, but not quelled.
St Augustine - Confessions
Chastity
without charity lies chained in hell:
It is but an unlighted lamp.
Many chaplains are chaste, but where is their charity?
There are no harder, hungrier men than men of the Church.
William Langland - The Vision of Piers the Plowman
The
essence of chastity is not the suppression of lust,
but the total orientation of one's life towards a goal.
Dietrich Bonhoeffer - Letters and Papers from Prison
